Puffing Billy is one of the easiest big day trips from Melbourne to do on your own, and one of the most heavily sold as a tour. So here is the arithmetic first, read on the railway's, Transport Victoria's and the tour operators' own websites on 15 October 2026, and the judgement afterwards.
A Belgrave to Lakeside return on Puffing Billy is A$66 for an adult. The metro train from Flinders Street to Belgrave costs A$5.70 for the whole day on a weekday and A$4.00 on a weekend, because Victorian public transport is half price until 1 January 2027. So a do-it-yourself day is about A$72 with two hours on the steam train. The three established guided day tours from Melbourne cost A$179 to A$230, and every one of them puts you on Puffing Billy for one way only.
The real cost of doing it yourself
Puffing Billy's fares are flat all year, from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, and the railway sells return tickets only. Belgrave to Lakeside and back is A$66 for an adult, A$52.50 concession, A$33 for a child aged 4 to 15 and A$25 for a toddler aged 1 to 3. Only babies under 12 months ride free. The family ticket, two adults and two children or toddlers, is A$165.
The metro leg is the cheap part. Belgrave is the end of the Belgrave line, a little under an hour from Flinders Street with through trains every 30 minutes off-peak. Until 1 January 2027 every Victorian fare is half price, so a full-fare myki pays at most A$5.70 for a weekday of travel across zones 1 and 2 and A$4.00 on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday. If you do not already have a myki, the card itself is A$6. From 1 January 2027 the weekday daily fare goes back to A$11.40 unless the state extends the discount.
So the honest weekday number is A$71.70 for an adult, or A$77.70 if you are buying a myki card for the day. On a weekend it is A$70, or A$76 with the card. From Belgrave station you follow the blue line painted on the platform for a two-minute walk to Puffing Billy's own station.
- Belgrave to Lakeside return, A$66: the classic run over the Monbulk Creek trestle bridge, 1 hour each way with a stop of an hour or more at Lakeside before your booked return
- Belgrave to Menzies Creek return, A$43.50: 25 minutes each way, Fridays to Sundays only on the current timetable; the cheapest way to ride, with the trestle bridge included
- Belgrave to Gembrook return, A$84.50: the whole line, 1 hour 50 minutes each way, Fridays to Sundays only
- Lakeside Visitor Centre: free entry, with the railway's history and a cafe

What the tours actually sell
Three companies with real review volume sell a dedicated Puffing Billy day from Melbourne, and all three are on the booking platform we use; a few smaller operators bundle the train into long Phillip Island days. AAT Kings and Gray Line, the names people expect, do not sell one on their own websites as of 15 October 2026. Every one of the three tours rides Puffing Billy one way, Belgrave to Lakeside, and drives you back. That is the trade at the heart of this decision: a tour gives you one hour on the steam train, a return ticket gives you two.
What the tour buys instead is the logistics. A coach collects you from a central Melbourne hotel between 7am and 8am, the Puffing Billy seat is booked for you, and nobody has to time the metro to beat a check-in that closes 30 minutes before the train leaves. And because the coach meets you at Lakeside, you skip the hour back to Belgrave.
- Go West Tours, Puffing Billy Steam Train Experience, A$179 at our link and by phone (A$189 through its own online checkout), about 6 hours, back at the Immigration Museum around 1:15pm, up to 24 guests. One way Belgrave to Lakeside, lunch at your own cost. A$199 at our link over Christmas to 11 January and on peak February dates
- Explore Australia Tours, Puffing Billy and Rainforest, A$179 adult, A$139 child, about 6 hours from 8am, with a stop at Grants Picnic Ground in Sherbrooke Forest for the birds. One way between Belgrave and Lakeside, and the operator warns the train may run the other way round
- Explore Australia Tours, Puffing Billy and Wildlife, A$219, about 8 hours, the same ride plus entry to Healesville Sanctuary
- Wine Hop And Coastal Tours, Puffing Billy and Healesville Sanctuary, A$230 adult and A$183 child on the operator's own booking engine, about 8 hours from the Hotel Windsor, back between 4pm and 6pm. One way Belgrave to Emerald Lake Park, plus Healesville Sanctuary and tastings at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie. Its own site adds a 2.1% card fee
What the brochures leave out
The one-way ride is in every operator's inclusions list, but never in the headline. Go West's Puffing Billy, Redwoods and Wine day, A$189 and Fridays to Sundays, goes further: its own page says the ticket is Belgrave to Menzies Creek, about 25 minutes of steam, before the coach heads for the redwood forest and Warburton. That is a fine day out, but it is a short ride for a Puffing Billy tour.
Total fire ban days are the other thing. Puffing Billy's own fire strategy says that on a total fire ban or extreme weather day the railway runs no trains at all, and there is no diesel substitute. Bans are declared in hot, dry weather, which in the Dandenong Ranges means summer, the busiest season. If you booked direct, the railway says it will try to move you to another date and refunds you if it cannot; otherwise its tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable, and trains are not cancelled for ordinary bad weather. None of the three tour operators says on its own page what happens to the day if the train is cancelled, so ask before you book in summer.
Flexibility runs the other way too. All three tours can be cancelled for a full refund at least 24 hours ahead at our link, and Go West says the same on its own site. A Puffing Billy ticket bought direct cannot be refunded at all if your plans change.

So which one?
Train it yourself if the steam train is the point of the day. For about A$72 on a weekday you get twice as long on Puffing Billy as any tour gives you, time at Lakeside, and a day that costs a little over A$100 less per adult than the cheapest tour. Book the 10am train and you are back at Belgrave at 1:20pm and in the city by about 2:30pm, roughly an hour after the half-day tours drop you off. For a family of four the gap is large: A$165 for the family ticket plus two adult metro fares is A$176.40, against A$636 to A$676 for four seats on a tour.
Take a tour if you are not comfortable with public transport in a new city, if you want Healesville Sanctuary on the same day and have no car, or if your only free day is one where an early hotel pickup is worth the money to you. Of the half-day tours, Go West is the better-rated on the platforms we track; if Healesville is the draw, the wildlife and sanctuary versions bundle an entry you would otherwise have to get to separately.
Either way, book early. Puffing Billy's own site says its trains sell out well in advance, there are no walk-up tickets at Belgrave, and the return train you get is fixed by the outbound train you choose.
Details change. We verify every price, duration, departure point and inclusion against the operator's own website, and we date every check, but operators can change them at any time without notice. Always confirm the details that matter to you with the operator before you book.
Good to know
How much is Puffing Billy if I go myself?
A$66 for an adult return from Belgrave to Lakeside, A$33 for a child aged 4 to 15, A$25 for a toddler aged 1 to 3, and A$165 for a family of two adults and two children or toddlers. Babies under 12 months ride free when they do not take a seat. Those prices apply to travel from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 and are the same every day. Add the metro: A$5.70 for a weekday or A$4.00 on a weekend for an adult until 31 December 2026.
Can I buy a one-way ticket on Puffing Billy?
No. The railway sells return tickets only, booked online in advance, and there are no open returns: the outbound train you choose fixes your return train. That is why the tours, which ride one way and drive you back from Lakeside, are the only practical way to do a one-way trip.
How do I get to Puffing Billy by train?
Take a Belgrave line train from Flinders Street to Belgrave, the last stop, which takes a little under an hour with through trains every 30 minutes off-peak. At Belgrave, follow the blue line painted on the platform; Puffing Billy's station is a two-minute walk. Check-in opens an hour before your train and closes 30 minutes before it leaves, so allow about 90 minutes from the city. Check the line for planned works before you go: Transport Victoria lists buses replacing trains on the Belgrave line on Sunday 25 October 2026.
Do I need to book Puffing Billy in advance?
Yes. The railway's own site says bookings are essential, trains sell out well in advance, and you cannot buy tickets at the booking office or walk up on the day. Tickets bought direct are non-refundable and non-transferable, so book once your date is firm.
Does Puffing Billy run on total fire ban days?
No. Puffing Billy's fire strategy says that on a total fire ban or extreme weather day it will not operate any train services, and on a catastrophic fire danger day the railway is closed. If the railway cancels your train it says it will try to move you to another date and will refund you if it cannot. In summer, check the fire danger rating for the Central district the day before.
Can children sit on the window sills?
Yes, sitting on the carriage sills with your legs outside is still allowed and is the reason most people go. Children under 4 may not sit on the sills, an adult can supervise at most two children within arm's reach, and nobody sits on the sills after sunset or on certain event trains.
Is a tour better value for a family?
No, the gap widens. A family ticket is A$165 and two adult metro fares add A$11.40 on a weekday, so A$176.40 before the children's metro fares; Victorian under-18s with a Youth myki travel free. Four tour seats cost A$636 with Explore Australia (A$179 adult, A$139 child) or A$676 with Go West (A$179 adult, A$159 child).
Which tour rides the most of the line?
None of them rides more than Belgrave to Lakeside, one way, about an hour. Go West's half-day tour, both Explore Australia tours and Wine Hop's Healesville tour all take that section. Go West's Redwoods and Wine day rides only Belgrave to Menzies Creek, about 25 minutes. If you want the full line to Gembrook, A$84.50 return and 1 hour 50 minutes each way on Fridays to Sundays, you have to book it yourself.
