When is whale shark season at Ningaloo?
Roughly mid-March to late July, triggered by the autumn coral spawn, with Three Islands running to late August. The sweet spot is April to June; May is widely considered optimal. From August to October the same boats pivot to humpback whale swims (A$550–750), which carry weaker or no sighting guarantees.
What are my odds of actually swimming with one?
Very high in season, every operator flies a spotter plane, and no-sighting days are rare enough that operators can afford free-repeat guarantees. Compare the guarantees before booking though: they range from 'choice of repeat, voucher or $100 refund' to no formal policy at all.
How good a swimmer do I need to be?
You need open-water snorkelling competence, roughly a 50-metre unaided swim. You'll be finning beside an animal that cruises faster than it looks. Skippers can refuse water entry to weak swimmers without refund, and observer tickets (from A$295) exist for anyone who'd rather watch from the boat.
What are the in-water rules?
