Kuranda Tours from Cairns: Same Two Rides, Six Packages, Three Sellers (2026)

Skyrail's own upgrade page splits the project into three stages. Stage 1, 19 August to 25 October 2026, is the Smithfield line: the cableway runs only a loop between Kuranda Terminal and Barron Falls Station, Wednesday to Sunday, boarding between 10:00am and 3:30pm, about an hour including time at Barron Falls, with shuttle buses between Smithfield and Kuranda. Skyrail is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for the whole period. Stage 2, from 26 October 2026 to June 2027, is normal operation between Smithfield and Kuranda with new gondolas on the lower section. Stage 3, July to November 2027, closes the upper Kuranda line and runs round trips from Smithfield to Red Peak instead. Skyrail also lists 8-9 December 2026 and Christmas Day as closure dates. The operators respond differently: Down Under Tours runs its Skyrail tours Wednesday to Sunday only, keeps the A$217 price and adds entry to Birdworld or Kuranda Koala Gardens, worth A$24 at the gate; Tropic Wings keeps its prices and adds free Australian Butterfly Sanctuary entry or a souvenir photo depending on the tour; Infinity Fun Travel charges A$260 until 25 October and A$295 from 26 October. The two asset owners cut the price instead: the railway's own train-plus-Skyrail-loop package is A$120 during the upgrade against A$145.50 normally.

Not between Thursday 10 and Sunday 20 September 2026. Queensland Rail found a bridge defect on the Kuranda Range during routine work on 9 September, attributed it to several heavy wet seasons, and closed the line until the repair is finished, offering a free coach to Kuranda to anyone holding a ticket. Skyrail's website carries the same notice as a banner. The railway's own planned-closure list is separate and longer: all services are cancelled 2-6 November 2026, 10-14 May 2027, 7-11 June 2027, 11-15 October 2027 and 1-5 November 2027, plus Christmas Day. On a cancellation day the tour operators on this page substitute a coach; none of them publishes a discount for doing so, so if the train is the reason you are going, check the date before you pay.

Do both, one up and one down; every package here does. The train is about 90 minutes from Cairns Central or an hour from Freshwater, with a ten-minute photo stop at Barron Falls and commentary. The cableway is about 90 minutes one way including the two mid-station stops, Red Peak for a rainforest boardwalk and Barron Falls for the Edge lookout, and gondolas seat six. Direction mostly follows the timetable: the morning trains leave Cairns at 8:45am and 9:30am and the afternoon trains leave Kuranda at 2:45pm and 3:30pm, so train-up tours start earlier and Skyrail-up tours start later. Gold Class is only on the second morning train and the 3:30pm return, which is why the Gold Class tour is locked to the 9:50am departure from Freshwater.

Less than any tour, and the gap is the price of the coach and the guide. Skyrail sells a one-way train plus one-way cableway package with a bus pickup from selected Cairns city locations for A$145.50 adult and A$79.50 child, valid to 31 March 2027; the day ends at Cairns Central station rather than your hotel. Bought separately, a Heritage Class train ticket is A$58 one way and a Skyrail one-way is A$74, but you then have to get between Freshwater station and the Smithfield terminal, seven kilometres apart, which is what the package's bus solves. The attractions the tours bundle are priced by their owners as follows: Rainforestation's Big Nature Package, which is the Army Duck, the Pamagirri experience and the Koala and Wildlife Park together, A$71; the Army Duck alone A$34; the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary A$25; Kuranda Koala Gardens A$24; Birdworld A$24, or A$43 for both; and the Rainforestation shuttle from the village A$15 return. So a self-built Grand Kuranda is roughly A$256 plus lunch against A$336 at our link, and the cheapest packaged day here costs A$72 more than the A$145.50 ticket-only day. What the extra buys is door-to-door transfers, a coach with a guide on it, pre-allocated seating and, on the dearer tours, lunch.

Gold Class is a separate carriage with individual lounge seating, a host, a souvenir gift and food and drink served between Freshwater and Kuranda; Down Under Tours lists sparkling wine, beer, juice, mocktails and appetisers. The railway itself sells the upgrade for A$57 per person one way and A$228 per family. Through Down Under Tours the upgrade is the difference between A$217 and A$286 direct, or A$218 and A$288 at our link, so about A$69: a A$12 premium for having it bundled. It is only on the 9:50am train from Freshwater and the 3:30pm from Kuranda, so it fixes your timetable. If the train ride is the point of the day and you have already accepted the tour price, it is a modest upgrade on a ninety-minute journey; if you are cost-conscious, the standard tour and a A$25 butterfly ticket buys more.

Same company, same day, same Rainforestation inclusions, same lunch. Tropic Wings' own inclusion lists differ by one item: Grand Kuranda adds the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. That sanctuary sells adult entry for A$25 on its own website and Grand Kuranda costs A$23 more than Classic at our link (A$329 against A$306 direct), so the premium is roughly the gate price. Until 25 October 2026 the choice is easier still, because Tropic Wings has added free Butterfly Sanctuary entry to Classic Kuranda as its upgrade-period sweetener, which makes Classic the same tour for A$23 less on those dates. Grand Kuranda gets a souvenir photo instead.

Four owners, and two of them own the rides. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is Skyrail Pty Ltd, ABN 82 010 880 458, which its website says is locally owned by the Chapman family. The Kuranda Scenic Railway is Queensland Rail, a state government corporation. Down Under Tours (Australia) Pty Limited, ABN 19 011 012 945, says on its own employment page that it is part of The Travel Corporation alongside AAT Kings, Contiki and Trafalgar. Tropic Wings trades under the Tropic Wings Trust, ABN 22 868 241 095, and describes itself as a family-owned business under the CaPTA Group; CaPTA's own website lists Rainforestation Nature Park and the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary among its attractions and names the Woodward family as owners. Infinity Fun Travel Pty Ltd, ABN 88 610 123 281, is a stand-alone Cairns company with an ABN active since January 2016. Kuranda Koala Gardens and Birdworld are separate from all of the above and are the two parks Down Under Tours' vouchers are good for.

Tropic Wings' own Skyrail and Train tour is A$210 direct, A$7 cheaper than Down Under Tours' equivalent, with a late 11:45am Skyrail departure and 2.5 hours in the village, but it is not sold through any booking link on this page, so we cannot score it and earn nothing if you book it; it is worth knowing about. Down Under Tours' Rainforestation and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures variants (A$300, A$352 with lunch, A$285 with Hartley's direct) are the same base tour with a park added and have too few reviews on the platforms we can measure to rank fairly. Infinity's self-guided Kuranda Express, A$180 until 25 October and A$230 after, transfers you to the rides without a guide and has ten reviews. Port Douglas and Palm Cove departures are different products with different prices and are left out, as are the railway's and Skyrail's own ticket packages, which are not tours and are covered in the do-it-yourself answer above.

Only on Grand Kuranda and Classic Kuranda, both a barbecue buffet at Rainforestation. The other four leave you in the village with the operator's recommendations and your own wallet. Kuranda has cafes and the markets, so this is a cost rather than a problem, but budget A$20-30 a head when comparing a A$218 tour with a A$313 one.

Child fares apply from 4 to 14 on every operator here and under-4s travel free on all of them; Infinity charges A$210 for a child. Skyrail's gondolas take prams and wheelchairs but have maximum dimensions, and Down Under Tours asks to be told in advance so the chair can be checked against both the gondola and the train. Tropic Wings and Down Under Tours both describe their coaches as wheelchair accessible. Infinity's ten-seat vehicle has no infant seats, so a baby travels on a lap.

Every listing on this page refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure at our link. Down Under Tours' own terms match that and add a 25 percent fee for cancelling on the day or missing the pickup; Tropic Wings says free cancellation with 24 hours' notice; Infinity's platform terms are the same 24 hours. Note that a Skyrail closure day or a train cancellation is the operator changing the product, not you cancelling, and none of the three publishes what it refunds in that case. Ask before you travel.

We earn a commission when you book through the Viator links, at no extra cost to you, and nothing when you book direct or buy the tickets from Skyrail or the railway. Several sentences here cost us money and stay in. The do-it-yourself day at A$145.50 is cheaper than anything we sell. Tropic Wings' three tours are A$6 to A$7 cheaper on its own website than at our links, and Down Under Tours is about a dollar cheaper direct. Infinity Fun Travel is the same A$260 either way. Booked through the operators, the A$210 Tropic Wings Skyrail and Train tour beats the cheapest tour we list by A$8. We have said all of it because the premise of this site is that the facts are right, not that they favour us.
