A day trip gives you about three hours in the water. A liveaboard gives you three days, including the two things a day boat can never offer: night diving, and the outer reef at dawn before another vessel has arrived. It is the single biggest upgrade available on the Great Barrier Reef, and it is the least well explained.
The price range on this page runs from A$560 to A$2,930, and that fivefold gap is not a quality ladder. It is four genuinely different products sharing one word. One is a permanently moored reef hotel you commute to. Two are roving dive boats that sleep 16 to 32 divers. One is a 12-berth sailing boat. One is an expedition ship that flies you home from Lizard Island. Work out which of those you want first, because comparing their prices before you have done that tells you nothing.

The default answer for most people, and deservedly so. Up to 11 dives including two night dives, across 19 sites on Flynn, Thetford, Milln and Pellowe Reefs, on a purpose-built boat carrying a maximum of 32 guests and six crew. Every dive crew member is a qualified PADI instructor, and the whole trip is a genuine round trip from Cairns, so you are never transferred between vessels mid-holiday.

The smallest boat on this page by a wide margin, and the only one under sail. Twelve guests maximum, three private double cabins plus a four-bunk shared cabin, and an itinerary that treats snorkellers, intro divers and certified divers as three separate products rather than an afterthought. Certified divers get four to five day dives plus a night dive, which is a serious count for a single night aboard.

Know before you book

The expedition, and the only boat here that reaches the reef most people mean when they picture the Great Barrier Reef at its best. Three nights through Ribbon Reefs 3 to 10 and the Cod Hole, an overnight at Watson's Bay off Lizard Island, then a one-hour scenic flight back to Cairns instead of sailing the distance twice. Eleven dives including a night dive, chef-prepared meals, and wine with dinner.

The one that works for non-divers, and the only true floating hotel here. Reef Encounter stays permanently moored on the outer reef and is serviced daily by a transfer boat, so you can stay one night or three and step off whenever you like. Staterooms are air-conditioned with ocean views and en-suite shower and toilet, which is a different standard of comfort from a dive-boat bunk.

Best for: Snorkellers, couples and anyone who wants the reef at night without a dive qualification.

The cheapest way to sleep on the Great Barrier Reef that we could verify, at A$560 for 32 hours aboard with a maximum of 16 guests. It is the budget end of the category done properly rather than a compromise: small boat, short trip, and the two things you actually came for, a night on the reef and dives a day boat cannot reach.

What actually makes a liveaboard worth the money?
Three things a day boat structurally cannot give you. Night dives, because the reef swaps its entire cast after dark. First light on the outer reef, before the day fleet arrives from Cairns. And dive sites that are simply too far to reach and return from in a day, which is the whole reason the Ribbon Reefs and Cod Hole are liveaboard-only. If none of those three matters to you, a good day boat at A$275 is the better buy and we would say so.
Do I have to be a certified diver?
No, but read the fine print, because it varies more than anything else here. Reef Encounter includes unlimited snorkelling and sells diving as an optional extra, so snorkellers are first-class guests. Coral Sea Dreaming prices snorkellers, intro divers and certified divers separately. Pro Dive's three-day trip is built around 11 dives and assumes you are diving or getting certified on it. Spirit of Freedom is a dedicated dive expedition.
What is the difference between a moored liveaboard and a roving one?
A moored liveaboard, which is what Reef Encounter is, stays permanently on the outer reef and is serviced daily by a transfer boat that brings you out and takes you back. You get resort-style rooms and can stay as many nights as you like, but you dive the same general area. A roving liveaboard departs Cairns with you aboard, moves between reefs while you sleep, and returns to Cairns. Pro Dive makes a point of this: no boat-to-boat passenger transfers.
Is the Cod Hole worth the premium?
It is the reason Spirit of Freedom costs four times what Rum Runner does. The Ribbon Reefs and Cod Hole sit well north of the Cairns day-trip range, and Spirit of Freedom's three-night trip reaches them and flies you back from Lizard Island rather than sailing the distance twice. That is a genuinely different holiday, not a fancier version of the same one. Whether it is worth A$2,530 depends entirely on how much of a diver you are.
Will I be seasick sleeping out there?
Possibly, and it is worth planning for. You are moored in open water for two or three nights, and the boat moves all night. Take a non-drowsy motion tablet before you leave the wharf rather than after you feel it, choose a lower and more central cabin if you have the option, and remember the winter dry season from June to October has the calmest conditions of the year.
Are reef levies included?
Not consistently, which is why we state it per listing. Spirit of Freedom says GST and all reef levies and fees are included in its fare. Most others do not publish their levy treatment at all, and where an operator has not said, we write that rather than guessing. The Environmental Management Charge is charged per day on the reef, so on a multi-day trip it is a larger number than on a day tour.
