An 'Atherton Tablelands tour' from Cairns can mean three different days. Some are a waterfall circuit: Josephine Falls and Babinda Boulders below the range, then Millaa Millaa Falls and a crater lake on top. One adds Paronella Park and drops Josephine. And two are mostly food, with tastings at a dairy, a distillery and a plantation; one of those has no waterfall at all. So the first thing to check on any listing is which falls it swims at. We read each operator's own website and booking engine on 10 October 2026 and set it out below.
Three things separate them more than the brochures admit. First, who can go: Uncle Brian's takes ages 18 to 35 only and Brett's is adults only, while two others publish family fares. Second, price: at our links the spread is A$170.10 to A$295, but three of the six are cheaper booked direct and two cost the same, and each listing says by how much. Third, timing: Millaa Millaa Falls, which five of these tours visit, is a construction site until June 2027, with no toilets for the rest of 2026 and no access for large buses, and Josephine Falls has works from 2 November.
We also looked at who owns whom. Northern Experience Eco Tours and Discovery Tours Australia sell the same departure under two names, from a Victorian-registered company, so we rank it once. The Waterfall Wanderers tour is sold on the booking platform as Active Tropics Explorer, and both names are one company in the Cairns Adventure Group. Barefoot Tours, Tropic Tours and Brett's are small, separately owned companies.
#1Fun, Falls and Forest · Backpacker Waterfall Day, Ages 18 to 35
Travellers aged 18 to 35 who want the most swims for the money and a social day.
The party bus of the Tablelands, and the most swimming on the page. The operator's booking engine runs Lake Eacham, the Curtain Fig, Malanda Falls for lunch and wildlife spotting, Millaa Millaa Falls, Josephine Falls and its natural rock slide, then Babinda Boulders, in a bus that takes up to 30 with music and games. Morning and afternoon tea, lunch and all park fees are included, and the operator states 'no fuel levies'.
Two things to know. The booking engine takes ages 18 to 35 only, while the website just says 18+, so anyone over 35 should look elsewhere. And the operator's own website and booking engine describe different days: the website starts at Babinda and promises a two-course sit-down lunch at a tea house, the booking engine starts at Lake Eacham and serves burgers at Malanda Falls. The ABR shows the 'Uncle Brian's Fun, Falls & Forest' name moving to Apex Tours Australia Pty Ltd (ABN 56 692 580 457) in December 2025.
What travellers loved
- Josephine Falls, Babinda Boulders, Millaa Millaa and Lake Eacham all in one day
- Lunch, teas and every park fee included, with 'no fuel levies' stated
- The cheapest adult fare booked direct, at A$187
Know before you book
- Ages 18 to 35 only on the operator's booking engine
- A$12 cheaper booked direct than at our link
- A group of up to 30, with a party atmosphere by design
- The operator's website and booking engine disagree on the stops and the lunch
Also: Full refund if cancelled at least 24 hours before departure at our link; booked direct, the operator charges in full inside 48 hours
#2Atherton Tablelands Waterfalls Tour · Small Group, Max 20
Adults who want a swim-heavy waterfall day in a group of 20 or fewer and do not mind walking to the Reef Fleet Terminal.
A small-group swimming day, capped at 20, that the operator itself says follows the weather rather than a fixed order. Its own list of places is the Cathedral Fig, Millaa Millaa Falls, Lake Eacham, lookouts and Josephine Falls, with a make-your-own picnic lunch of bread, salad, meat and fruit, plus morning and afternoon snacks and plunger coffee. It is the only tour on this page that meets at a bus bay in the city rather than collecting everyone from their hotel, unless you pay the A$10 pickup.
Barefoot Tours is a registered business name of Cairns Waterfalls Pty Ltd (ABN 88 666 950 581, active since March 2023), which also trades as What'SUP Cairns; the site describes itself as a women-led, independently owned small business. Its own pages disagree with each other more than most: the minimum age is 8 in the FAQ and 18 in the price box and on the booking calendar, and the start time and cancellation notice differ between the website and the booking engine.
What travellers loved
- Capped at 20 guests, with a minimum of 6 to run
- Cathedral Fig, Millaa Millaa Falls, Lake Eacham and Josephine Falls by the operator's own list
- At A$229 our link is A$12.49 cheaper than the operator's own checkout total
Know before you book
- Minimum age is published as both 8 and 18 on the operator's own pages; ask before booking with children
- Not daily: several October dates show as unavailable on the booking calendar
- Hotel pickup is an extra A$10 a person booked direct; the default is the Reef Fleet Terminal bus bay
- The order of stops is set on the day by the weather
Also: Full refund if cancelled at least 24 hours before departure at our link; booked direct, the website FAQ says 48 hours and the booking engine says 24
#3Outback Tasting Adventures · Seven Food and Drink Stops, No Waterfalls
Adults who would rather taste the Tablelands than swim in it, and anyone with mobility limits who wants an easy day.
This is the one tour on the page that is about eating, not swimming, and the operator says so plainly: its FAQ answers 'No, our tours do not include swimming.' The day is breakfast at the Lake Barrine Tea House, then tastings at Winter & Mann in Yungaburra, Shaylee Strawberry Farm (lunch, strawberry wine and gelato), Gallo Dairyland, The Humpy, Mt Uncle Distillery and Emerald Creek Ice Creamery, with a quick stop at the Curtain Fig and a creek where you may see a platypus. Everything you eat and drink on the stops is included.
It runs Wednesday to Saturday only, and adults only. The operator's own booking engine names a different lunch stop (Australian Platypus Park) from its brochure and tour page (Shaylee), so treat the exact venues as subject to change. The company behind it is Kuranda & Outback Tours Pty Ltd (ABN 83 678 326 193, from June 2024).
What travellers loved
- Breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon tea and every tasting included
- Seven tasting stops, from a distillery to a dairy to an ice creamery
- Very little walking, which the operator says suits travellers who do not want a hiking day
Know before you book
- No waterfalls and no swimming on the scheduled tour
- Wednesday to Saturday only
- Adults only (the booking engine says 18+, though one price label reads 15+)
- The operator's own pages list different lunch venues and stop orders
Also: Full refund if cancelled at least 24 hours before departure, at our link and by the operator's website; its Cairns brochure instead quotes a 75% fee inside 12 hours
#4Waterfall Wanderers Day Tour · Cathedral Fig with Traditional Owners
Families and budget travellers who want the classic waterfall circuit plus an Indigenous cultural stop.
The cheapest full day on the page at our link, and the only one that builds in time with Traditional Owners: a 45-minute tour at the Cathedral Fig. After that it is Babinda Boulders, Josephine Falls, Millaa Millaa Falls and Lake Eacham, with lunch, morning and afternoon tea and national park fees included, and the operator adds a possible platypus stop at Peterson Creek in Yungaburra. The operator rates the walking at about 3.5 km, low to moderate.
The booking platform sells it as Active Tropics Explorer; the operator sells it as Waterfall Wanderers, and both business names sit on Enjoy2Day Pty Ltd (ABN 56 120 505 240), part of the Cairns Adventure Group with Foaming Fury and Barron River Rafting. A Cairns booking agent, Cairns Discovery Tours, resells the same tour at the same A$189. The operator's own pages disagree on whether the day includes Mungalli Falls and whether lunch is a buffet or pub-style.
What travellers loved
- A 45-minute tour with Traditional Owners at the Cathedral Fig
- Four of the big swimming spots: Babinda, Josephine, Millaa Millaa and Lake Eacham
- Takes children from age 2 with a published family fare
Know before you book
- The A$170.10 special ends 28 October 2026; A$189 after
- Booked direct, cancelling 24 to 48 hours out gets only 50% back
- Return time is not published
- Josephine Falls works from 2 November may close the swimming area for about two weeks
Also: Full refund if cancelled at least 24 hours before departure at our link; booked direct, full refund only beyond 48 hours and 50% between 24 and 48
#5Tablelands, Waterfalls & Paronella Park · Park Entry Included
First-timers and families who want Paronella Park and one waterfall swim in a single day.
The only tour here that includes Paronella Park, the 1930s Spanish-style ruin at Mena Creek, with priority entry, a 30-minute guided walk and about two and a half hours on site. The gate price is A$62 an adult, so that is a real part of the fare. The rest of the day is Lake Barrine with Devonshire tea, the Curtain Fig boardwalk, a swim at Millaa Millaa Falls, a restaurant lunch and Babinda Boulders if time allows. It does not go to Josephine Falls or Lake Eacham.
The same bus is sold under two names. Discovery Tours Australia's page uses the same booking link, the same trip code (NEET) and the same text, and the booking engine's terms read 'Trading as Discovery Tours Australia & Northern Experience Eco Tours'. Both names belong to Australian Adventure Group Holdings Pty Ltd (ABN 84 661 075 163, main business location Victoria), which also holds Dingo's K'gari Adventures, Wild Tasmania Tours and Territory Expeditions. The Northern Experience site still says '100% locally-owned and family-operated'; the register says otherwise.
What travellers loved
- Paronella Park entry (A$62 at the gate) and a guided walk included
- Runs every day except 24 and 25 December
- Publishes a family fare and takes children from age 4
Know before you book
- A$11 cheaper an adult booked direct than at our link
- No Josephine Falls; Babinda Boulders only 'time permitting'
- The operator cannot take wheelchairs or walkers
- Discovery Tours Australia's version is the same departure, not a second option
Also: Full refund if cancelled at least 24 hours before departure, at our link and direct
#6Taste of the Tablelands · Max 11 Guests, Mostly Fridays
Couples and families who want a bit of everything, food, wildlife and one swim, in a very small group.
A food-and-nature hybrid in a group of 4 to 11. The operator lists ten stops: the Barron Falls canopy walk at Kuranda, Skybury coffee and papaya plantation for morning tea, hand-feeding rock wallabies at Granite Gorge, Mt Uncle Distillery, a light lunch with cheese and chocolate at Gallo's Dairyland, the Curtain Fig, Bromfield Swamp, a drive past Malanda Falls, a swim at Millaa Millaa Falls and afternoon refreshments at Lake Barrine. That is the widest spread of the Tablelands on this page, and the only one with the wallabies.
It is also the dearest at our link and the hardest to get on. The booking platform sells it on Fridays only; the operator's own engine had Fridays plus one Wednesday open in October. Tropic Tours is the trading name of Aussie Global Direct Pty Ltd (ABN 69 641 698 740), owned by Simon and Renae by its own site. Booked direct it is A$6 cheaper for an adult and A$25 cheaper for a child.
What travellers loved
- Ten stops, three tastings and the Granite Gorge rock wallabies
- Small group: 4 to 11 guests
- Children welcome, with a child fare and free infants
Know before you book
- Few departure days: mostly Fridays
- The operator's terms mention wet-season closures from November to February, so check your date is actually running
- A$6 cheaper an adult and A$25 cheaper a child booked direct
- Direct bookings are non-refundable inside 48 hours
Also: Full refund if cancelled at least 24 hours before departure at our link; booked direct, nothing back inside 48 hours
Details change. We verify every price, duration, departure point and inclusion against the operator's own website, and we date every check, but operators can change them at any time without notice. Always confirm the details that matter to you with the operator before you book.
Good to know
Which tour goes to which waterfall?
They differ more than the names suggest. Millaa Millaa Falls: Barefoot, Northern Experience, Tropic Tours, Uncle Brian's and Waterfall Wanderers. Josephine Falls and its rock slide: Barefoot, Uncle Brian's and Waterfall Wanderers. Babinda Boulders: Uncle Brian's and Waterfall Wanderers, and Northern Experience if time permits. Lake Eacham: Barefoot, Uncle Brian's and Waterfall Wanderers; Lake Barrine instead on Northern Experience, Tropic Tours and Brett's. Paronella Park: Northern Experience only. Brett's Outback Tasting Adventures has no waterfall and no swimming at all, by the operator's own FAQ. Josephine and Babinda sit below the range off the Bruce Highway, so a tour that does both plus Millaa Millaa covers more ground than one that stays on top.
Is Millaa Millaa Falls open?
Yes, with works. Tablelands Regional Council began upgrading the visitor area in July 2026 and expects to finish in June 2027. Its notice says there are no toilets at the falls for the rest of 2026 (use the ones in Millaa Millaa township), the lower car park will be closed for long periods, 'large buses, caravans and trailers will not be able to access the site', and the whole precinct may shut for a day or two at short notice. None of the operators says on its own site whether its vehicle counts as a large bus, so if Millaa Millaa is the reason you are booking, ask the operator whether it is stopping there that week.
Is Josephine Falls open?
It is now. Queensland Parks has announced maintenance at Josephine Falls from 2 November 2026, with partial closures of the toilets, the bottom pool and both viewing platforms, and 'an anticipated 2-week temporary full closure to the swimming area'; the alert runs to 28 February 2027. Josephine Falls is on Barefoot, Uncle Brian's and Waterfall Wanderers. Parks also warns that access to the top of the falls is prohibited and that serious injuries and deaths have occurred there, and flash flooding can happen at any time of year. Swim where the guide tells you to.
Is it safe to swim at Babinda Boulders?
In the marked area, with care. Cairns Regional Council's own drowning-risk report says 21 people have drowned at the Boulders since 1916, three of them since April 2020. Uncle Brian's and Waterfall Wanderers stop there, and Northern Experience does if time allows. Uncle Brian's says strong swimming ability is required for its swim stops. Stay in the designated swimming hole and out of the water above it.
Which tours take children, and which are adults only?
Uncle Brian's takes ages 18 to 35 on its booking engine, and Brett's is adults only. Barefoot Tours publishes both 8 and 18 as its minimum age on different pages of its own site, so ask before booking with children. Families are best served by Waterfall Wanderers (children from 2 at A$149, a family of four A$527) and Northern Experience (children 4 to 14 at A$169 direct, a family of four A$739 direct, Paronella Park included). Tropic Tours takes children 4 to 12 at A$210 direct and infants free.
Is Paronella Park worth adding, and can I do it without a tour?
It is the strongest reason to choose Northern Experience, because entry is included. At the gate Paronella Park is A$62 an adult, A$34 a child aged 5 to 15 and A$182 for a family of four, and the ticket includes both the day tour and the evening 'Darkness Falls' tour and stays valid for 24 months. It opens 9am to 6pm every day except 24 and 25 December and is about 120 km from Cairns. If you are driving yourself, it fits with Josephine Falls and Babinda Boulders on the same southern loop.
Can I just drive the waterfall circuit myself?
Yes, and for two people with a hire car it is cheaper. We could find no entry fee for Josephine Falls, Babinda Boulders, Millaa Millaa Falls, Lake Eacham, Lake Barrine or the Curtain Fig: Queensland Parks lists permit fees only for commercial groups and camping, and the councils that run Millaa Millaa and Babinda publish none. Queensland Parks puts Lake Barrine about 60 km and an hour from Cairns, and Josephine Falls 75 km south. What a tour adds is a guide who knows where the platypus and tree kangaroos are, someone else driving the Gillies Range, and lunch sorted. Note the current works at Millaa Millaa (no toilets) and Lake Barrine, where Queensland Parks has the circuit track closed to 4 November 2026.
Are Discovery Tours Australia and Northern Experience different tours?
No. Discovery Tours Australia's Tablelands, Waterfalls and Paronella Park page uses the same booking link, the same trip code (NEET) and the same itinerary as Northern Experience Eco Tours, and the booking engine's terms say 'Trading as Discovery Tours Australia & Northern Experience Eco Tours'. On the Australian Business Register both names belong to Australian Adventure Group Holdings Pty Ltd, ABN 84 661 075 163, whose main business location is in Victoria. On the booking platform they are listed as two suppliers at identical prices. We rank the departure once, under Northern Experience, and do not link the duplicate.
Is it cheaper to book direct?
On three of these, yes. Northern Experience is A$219 direct against A$230 at our link, Uncle Brian's A$187 against A$199, and Tropic Tours A$289 against A$295 for an adult and A$210 against A$235 for a child. Brett's is A$265 either way. Waterfall Wanderers is A$189 either way, plus a 1.75% card surcharge direct, and until 28 October it is A$170.10 at our link. Barefoot Tours advertises A$225 on its website but its booking engine totals A$241.49 with fees, against A$229 at our link. Booked direct you are on the operator's own cancellation terms, which are stricter than our links' 24 hours on Tropic Tours, Uncle Brian's and Waterfall Wanderers.
Which tours did you leave out, and why?
Discovery Tours Australia's version, because it is the same departure as Northern Experience. Brett's Port Douglas departure, because it is the same tour at the same price from a different town. Wait-a-While's night tour for platypus and tree kangaroos, and the Paronella Park evening tours from Tropic Tours and Infinity, because they are evening outings rather than a day on the Tablelands. Waterfall Wanderers' half-day Splash and Slide, which the operator has paused outside school holidays. Cairns Discovery Tours, because it is a booking agent: its A$189 waterfall tour is the Waterfall Wanderers day. Kuranda packages are on our separate Kuranda page.
How do you make money from this page, and where does it cost you?
We earn a commission when you book through the Viator links, at no extra cost to you, and nothing when you book direct. Several sentences on this page cost us money and stay in. Three operators are A$6 to A$25 cheaper on their own websites, driving yourself is cheaper than any tour here for two people with a car, and one operator we would otherwise have listed twice is a duplicate we chose not to link. We have said all of it because the premise of this site is that the facts are right, not that they favour us.
