A reef scenic flight from Cairns is one product sold two ways. For A$249 to A$289 you get 40 minutes in a small high-wing plane over Green Island, Arlington Reef and the sand cays. For A$464 and up you get 30 to 45 minutes in a helicopter over much the same water, lower and slower, with the doors a hand's width from the coral. Four companies fly these routes and all four are on this page; we read each operator's own website, booking engine and terms on 22 October 2026 and set out what they actually charge and where they actually leave from.

Three things decide the booking more than the brochures admit. First, the departure point: GSL Aviation has its own terminal on Royal Flying Doctor Street, Daintree Air Services and Zoom Helicopters are in the general aviation precinct at Aeroglen off Tom McDonald Drive and Bush Pilots Avenue, and Nautilus Aviation lifts off from the Pier Heliport on the city waterfront. Only GSL includes a courtesy bus. Second, your weight: every operator sets a limit, from 115 kg at Daintree Air to 130 kg on the helicopters, and Daintree Air weighs you at the terminal. Third, the seat: GSL and Daintree Air guarantee a window, Zoom says most of the time, Nautilus says the pilot decides.

Prices are per person and all-in at our links, including the fuel surcharges every operator added from 1 April 2026. Nautilus and Zoom are the same price or within A$5 booked direct; Daintree Air adds its A$10 fuel levy at check-in if you book direct but includes it at our link. Each listing says which.

The 30-minute flight plus ten minutes that change what you see. The extra time takes the helicopter past Green Island to the eastern, outer edge of Arlington Reef, where the shelf drops away and the water goes from turquoise to navy, then north past Vlasoff Cay before the run home. Zoom publishes about 100 km and up to 2,500 feet for this one, so you get both the low pass and the overview.

It is A$120 more than the Inner Reef Explorer for ten more minutes, which is a steep rate for the time, and the same crew, helicopter and rules apply. Buy it if the outer reef is what you came for; the inner reef flight already includes Green Island and Vlasoff.

The entry-level helicopter flight, A$27 under Nautilus's 30 minutes at our link, and the one that publishes the lowest altitude: 500 to 1,000 feet for this route, about 75 km out past False Cape and Mission Bay to Green Island, along the western edge of Arlington Reef, a circle of Vlasoff Cay and back over Upolu Cay. Zoom is a small Cairns company with a founder chief pilot, and it holds a 5.0 rating on each of the three platforms we read, on a combined sample in the hundreds.

What you give up against the planes is the altitude and the guarantee. A helicopter at 500 feet shows you turtles; a plane at 1,500 feet shows you the shape of the reef. And window seats are 'most of the time', with a rear middle seat possible when the helicopter is full.

What travellers loved

  • Flies at 500 to 1,000 feet, the lowest published altitude on this page
  • Green Island, West Arlington Reef, Vlasoff Cay and Upolu Cay in 30 minutes, about 75 km
  • Full refund up to 24 hours before departure at our link, against 48 hours booked direct

Know before you book

  • A minimum of two seats per flight; a single traveller is booked as a single seat subject to the operator's rules
  • Window seats are not guaranteed in busy periods; the helicopter type is not stated on the operator's site
  • No transfers; you find your own way to Bush Pilots Avenue in the general aviation precinct

The A$249 plane flight, and the one whose operator claims the longest track record: Air Tours Australia, which trades as Daintree Air Services, calls itself the longest running reef flight company in Australia and says it has more than 40 years in aviation. The flight covers up to 140 km of the outer Barrier plus Green Island and Vlasoff Cay in purpose-built, air-conditioned aircraft where every seat is a window seat, and the operator's own advice is to fly between 9:30am and 2:30pm for the colours.

The catches are in the fine print. There is no child fare, you will be weighed at the terminal against a 115 kg limit, there are no transfers, and the flight is sold as non-refundable at our link. It is also sold under a second brand, Great Barrier Reef Scenic Flights, from the same address and booking engine; it is the same product.

What travellers loved

  • Every seat a window seat in air-conditioned aircraft; up to 140 km of the outer Barrier plus Green Island and Vlasoff Cay
  • Hourly departures from 9am to 3pm, and the operator's own tip to fly between 9:30am and 2:30pm

Know before you book

  • Maximum body weight 115 kg, and you are weighed at the terminal; 5 kg or more over your declared weight and the operator may refuse boarding without refund
  • No child fare: everyone aged 2 and over pays A$249, infants under 2 fly free on a lap
  • No transfers, and the booking at our link is non-refundable except when the operator cancels for weather

The plane flight with the fewest catches. GSL flies the Reef Hopper in a five-seat Cessna 206 or a seven-seat GA8 Airvan, both high-wing types with a window for every passenger, and it is the only operator on this page that publishes a courtesy bus to city hotels. The route goes out over Green Island to Arlington and Upolu reefs, then back along the coast past Double Island and Palm Cove, so you get the reef and the northern beaches in one 40-minute loop.

GSL also has the friendliest terms here: a full refund up to 24 hours out whether you book direct or at our link, a published child fare, and its own passenger terminal with lockers and a waiting room. The trade-off against Daintree Air is A$40 a head for the transfers and the guarantee.

What travellers loved

  • High-wing Cessna 206 or GA8 Airvan with guaranteed window seats and pilot commentary
  • Courtesy bus to and from Cairns city accommodation, subject to availability
  • A$229 child fare for ages 3 to 14; free cancellation to 24 hours before departure

Know before you book

  • Maximum passenger weight 125 kg, declared at booking
  • At our link a minimum of two people per booking applies; transfers cover the city centre only, not Palm Cove or the northern beaches
  • Small aircraft take effort to board; GSL says they are not recommended for limited mobility or late pregnancy

Two World Heritage areas in one flight. The first half is the 30-minute reef loop, Green Island, Arlington Reef and Upolu Sand Cay; the second turns inland over Double Island and Palm Cove, climbs the range into Barron Gorge National Park and follows the Barron River to Barron Falls and the village of Kuranda before descending to the city. For people who will not do the Kuranda day, it is the only way on this page to see the falls from above.

At A$681 it is A$190 more than the reef-only flight for 15 minutes more, and it carries the same Nautilus conditions: no guaranteed window, no fixed timetable, departures confirmed after booking. Zoom's 45-minute reef-and-rainforest flight covers similar ground for A$659 from Bush Pilots Avenue if the city heliport does not matter to you.

The helicopter that leaves from town. Nautilus flies this 30-minute loop to Green Island, Arlington Reef and Upolu Sand Cay from the Pier Heliport on the Cairns waterfront, a walk from most city hotels, which is worth something when every other departure here is on the airport's general aviation side. Nautilus is the big operator in this market, part of the Morris Group with more than 40 helicopters across northern Australia, and the 30-minute flight is its base product.

Two things to know before you book. Window seats are not guaranteed and the pilot assigns seats by weight and balance, and there is no fixed timetable: departures are 'based on request and availability' and the reservations team confirms after you book. Nautilus does not guarantee the helicopter type either, so the six-seat Bell 407 on the website may be a different machine on the day.

What travellers loved

  • Departs the Pier Heliport on the city waterfront for bookings of up to six people
  • Green Island, Arlington Reef and Upolu Sand Cay, with Vlasoff Cay at low tide
  • Full refund up to 24 hours before departure at our link, against 48 hours direct

Know before you book

  • Window seats are not guaranteed; seating is at the pilot's discretion
  • No fixed departure times; the flight is confirmed after booking subject to minimum numbers
  • 130 kg seat limit; passengers over 130 kg buy a second seat at 50 percent, payable on the day; 10 kg personal items limit

Details change. We verify every price, duration, departure point and inclusion against the operator's own website, and we date every check, but operators can change them at any time without notice. Always confirm the details that matter to you with the operator before you book.

Good to know

Plane or helicopter?

The planes are the value option and the helicopters are the experience. Both 40-minute planes cost A$249 to A$289 and both cover Green Island, Arlington Reef and the Upolu and Vlasoff cays, with GSL also tracking up the coast past Double Island and Palm Cove. The helicopters start at A$464 for 30 minutes and fly low: Zoom publishes 500 to 1,000 feet on its 30-minute flight against 2,000 feet and higher on its longer ones, and a helicopter can hover and circle a cay in a way a plane cannot. If the reef is the point, a plane shows you more of it per dollar. If the flight is the point, book a helicopter.

Where does each flight leave from?

Three different places, and none of them is the passenger terminal you flew into. GSL Aviation runs its own terminal at 83 Royal Flying Doctor Street, Cairns City, and includes a courtesy bus from city hotels subject to availability. Daintree Air Services is at 97 Tom McDonald Drive, Aeroglen, and Zoom Helicopters at 21 Bush Pilots Avenue, both in the general aviation precinct on the far side of the airport, with no transfers. Nautilus Aviation departs from the Pier Heliport at 2 Pier Point Road on the city waterfront for bookings of up to six passengers; its own listing says groups of seven or more leave from its hangar at Bush Pilots Avenue instead.

Will I get a window seat?

It depends on the operator, and this matters more on a reef flight than on any other kind. GSL Aviation guarantees a window seat on every flight; its Cessna 206 carries five passengers and its GA8 Airvan seven. Daintree Air says everyone has their own large window in its purpose-built aircraft. Zoom Helicopters answers 'most of the time', and warns that busy periods and larger group bookings can mean a rear middle seat. Nautilus Aviation states plainly that window seats are not guaranteed and seating is at the pilot's discretion, because the pilot loads the helicopter by weight and balance.

What are the weight limits?

Every operator has one, and you must declare your weight when you book. Daintree Air Services sets 115 kg, weighs you at the terminal, and says it can refuse boarding without refund if you are 5 kg or more over the weight you gave. GSL Aviation sets 125 kg. Zoom Helicopters and Nautilus Aviation both set a 130 kg single-seat payload; Nautilus says passengers over 130 kg must buy a second seat at 50 percent of the fare, payable to Nautilus on the day, and both helicopter operators say a variance of more than 10 percent from your declared weight can attract an extra charge.

Is anything charged on top of the fare?

Less than it used to be, because the operators folded their fuel surcharges into the price from 1 April 2026. Nautilus publishes its share: A$32 of the A$487 30-minute fare and A$51 of the A$676 reef-and-rainforest fare. Zoom says a fuel surcharge is included in all prices. The exception is Daintree Air Services booked direct, where the website fare is A$239 and a A$10 fuel levy is payable at check-in; at our link the A$249 includes it. On cards, Zoom adds 1.5 percent on Amex, Visa and Mastercard booked direct, and GSL does not take American Express or Diners.

What if I need to cancel?

The terms differ between booking direct and booking at our links, and not always in the direction you would expect. Booked direct, Zoom and Nautilus both refund in full with 48 hours' notice, 50 percent between 24 and 48 hours, and nothing inside 24 hours; at our links both allow a full refund up to 24 hours before departure. GSL refunds in full up to 24 hours out either way. Daintree Air Services is the one to watch: its listing at our link is sold as non-refundable, and its own terms page covers charter flights only, so its direct cancellation terms for the scenic flight are not published. Weather is different: every operator rebooks or refunds in full if the pilot cancels.

Can I land on a sand cay?

Yes, with a helicopter and a tide chart. Zoom's Sand Cay tour is A$684 for 30 minutes of flying and 30 minutes on Vlasoff Cay with a glass of bubbles, and it lands only when the cay is unoccupied and the tide allows, otherwise the flight continues to the outer reef. Nautilus sells a two-hour Vlasoff Sand Cay picnic with snorkelling gear for A$1,206, departures subject to tides. Neither is ranked here because neither is a scenic flight in the ordinary sense, but if the photo you want is your own footprints on white sand, that is the product.

When is the best time of day to fly?

The middle of the day. Daintree Air Services, which calls itself the longest running reef flight company in Australia, says the best time is between 9:30am and 2:30pm, when the sun is overhead and the reef colours show through the water. Early and late departures are cheaper to find seats on for a reason. On cloudy days the colour flattens whatever the hour, and every operator here flies at the pilot's discretion, so build in a spare day if the flight is the thing you came for.

Can I combine the flight with a reef boat?

Several ways. GSL Aviation packages its Reef Hopper with an afternoon snorkel boat for A$469 and with a Green Island cruise for A$429, both on its own site. Nautilus Aviation sells fly-and-cruise combinations with Reef Magic, Great Adventures, Quicksilver and Down Under Cruise and Dive, including 10-minute flights from the reef pontoons themselves, and Zoom sells Sunlover and Moore Reef packages. Down Under Cruise and Dive's own 'Get High' day adds a 10-minute helicopter flight to its full-day reef cruise. If you only want a few minutes in the air, a 10-minute pontoon flight does that, but it is a lap of the pontoon rather than a scenic flight over the reef.

Who owns whom?

Four separate companies. GSL Aviation is GSL Aviation Pty Ltd, ABN 12 127 037 190, registered in the Whitsundays, which is where it began; its terms say it no longer operates its own flights there. Daintree Air Services is a business name of Air Tours Australia Pty Ltd, ABN 27 105 322 923, which also sells the same flight through a second website, greatbarrierreefscenicflights.com.au, with the same Rezdy booking engine and the same Aeroglen address. Zoom Helicopters Pty Ltd is ABN 21 634 497 699. Nautilus Aviation Pty Ltd, ABN 94 060 410 317, describes itself as part of the Morris Group with more than 40 helicopters across northern Australia. GBR Helicopters, the other name people search for, has a domain that now redirects to Nautilus Aviation's website, so we have not listed it separately.
