Search for a jet boat ride on Sydney Harbour and you will be offered three brands: Thunder Jet and Oz Jet from Circular Quay, and HarbourJet from Darling Harbour. They look like three competitors. On the Australian Business Register they are two. THUNDER JET BOAT and HARBOURJETBOAT are both registered business names of Sydney Harbour Attractions Pty Ltd, the company HarbourJet's own terms say you are contracting with, and HarbourJet's cancellation line is Thunder Jet's phone number. Oz Jet Boating is a separate company, Sydney Harbour Boating Services Pty Ltd, and it is the real alternative.

The ride itself is much the same on all three: about 30 minutes of spins, fishtails and power stops past the Opera House, under or beside the Harbour Bridge and out towards Rose Bay and Watsons Bay, with ponchos and life jackets provided and a 120cm minimum height. What differs is where you board, whether you can stretch to 45 minutes, and above all what you pay and what happens if you cancel. Those differences are large, and they run in opposite directions for the two companies. We read every fare on the operators' own booking engines and on our booking partner on 24 October 2026.

Three brands, two companies

Thunder Jet runs purple and yellow boats from Jetty 1 on the Eastern Pontoon at Circular Quay, halfway between the ferry wharves and the Opera House. HarbourJet runs from Cockle Bay Marina in Darling Harbour, in front of Nick's Seafood Restaurant. On ABN Lookup, ABN 19 082 702 412 belongs to Sydney Harbour Attractions Pty Ltd, active since 1999, and its registered business names include THUNDER JET BOAT and THUNDER JET BOATING (since 2006), THUNDERJET and HARBOURJETBOAT (both registered December 2024), DARLING HARBOUR WATER TAXIS, whale watching and Whitehaven cruises. HarbourJet's terms name Sydney Harbour Attractions Pty Ltd trading as Harbour Jet Boat as the company you contract with and tell you to cancel on (02) 9566 1066, which is the number on every Thunder Jet page. Our booking partner lists the HarbourJet rides under the supplier name "HarbourJet (operated by Thunder Jet)", and the video on HarbourJet's home page is posted from Thunder Jet's YouTube channel.

One loose end, published rather than smoothed over: Thunder Jet's own terms page says you are contracting with Yellow Water Taxis Pty Ltd trading as Thunder Jet Boat. We could find no company of that name on ABN Lookup; the business name "yellow water taxis" is registered to a different company, Fantasea Pty Ltd. The Thunder Jet Boat business name itself sits with Sydney Harbour Attractions, so that is the company we treat as the operator.

Oz Jet Boating runs red shark-painted boats, also from the Eastern Pontoon at Circular Quay. Its website footer names Sydney Harbour Boating Services Pty Ltd, ABN 18 164 245 550, as the licensed operator, and ABN Lookup shows that company, active since July 2013, holding the names OZJET BOATING, SYDNEY JET, DOWNUNDER JET and DOWN UNDER JET SYDNEY. Nothing on the register connects it to Sydney Harbour Attractions. So at Circular Quay you are choosing between two companies on the same pontoon, and at Darling Harbour you are buying the first of those companies under another name.

What it actually costs, and where to book it

Thunder Jet and HarbourJet publish a retail price of A$85 for an adult on the 30-minute ride and then sell well below it on their own booking engines. On 24 October 2026 Thunder Jet's engine charged A$55 adult, A$39 child and A$175 for a family of two adults and two children, for dates from today into late November; HarbourJet's charged A$49 adult, A$39 child and A$170 family. Our booking partner sells both at the A$85 retail price, A$59 child for Thunder Jet and A$49 for HarbourJet. On these two brands our link is A$27 to A$36 dearer per adult than booking direct, even after Thunder Jet's surcharge, and we would rather tell you that than take the commission.

The direct prices come with conditions. Thunder Jet's terms add a 4.5% surcharge for card and booking fees to every booking, which turns A$55 into about A$57.48, and the fee is not refunded if you cancel. Its ride page calls the discount a strictly limited-time school holiday sale and its rides page shows A$65 "now", so the A$55 on the booking engine is a price that moves. HarbourJet's terms say all tickets are non-refundable, with cancellations inside two days subject to approval and possibly transferable. Our booking partner refunds either ride in full up to 24 hours before departure.

Oz Jet is the reverse. Its own FareHarbor checkout showed A$93.85 adult, A$68.55 child, A$65.65 a head for a family of four and A$63.27 a head for groups of five or more on a November date we checked. Our booking partner sells the same ride at A$89 adult and A$65 child, so our link is the cheaper way in at full price. Oz Jet's website also advertises up to 30% off full-price tickets with a code at checkout; we did not test the code, so we cannot tell you what it takes off this ride, and if it applies in full it would beat our link.

The 45-minute rides follow the same pattern. Thunder Jet's Extreme Adrenaline Rush was A$95 adult, A$65 child and A$250 family on its own engine against A$119 at our link; HarbourJet's Sydney Harbour Adventure was A$90 adult, A$59 child and A$250 family direct against A$99 at our link. Oz Jet does not sell a longer ride.

  • Thunder Jet 30 minutes: A$55 direct on 24 Oct 2026 plus 4.5% surcharge (retail A$85); A$85 at our link
  • HarbourJet 30 minutes: A$49 direct on 24 Oct 2026, non-refundable (retail A$85); A$85 at our link
  • Oz Jet 30 minutes: A$93.85 direct before codes; A$89 at our link
  • Thunder Jet 45 minutes: A$95 direct (retail A$119); A$119 at our link; one departure a day, 12.30pm
  • HarbourJet 45 minutes: A$90 direct; A$99 at our link; 12.30pm departure on the day we checked
  • Extras on all three: photos and video sold after the ride; nothing else is compulsory

Cancellation is where the cheap fares cost you

Jet boats run in the rain and cancel for weather the operators judge unsafe; Thunder Jet and HarbourJet both define that as more than a drizzle, wind or swell, and both say they will try to reschedule at no cost or issue a gift voucher when they cancel. The rules that matter are for when you cancel.

Booked direct with Thunder Jet, you get a refund more than 24 hours out less the 4.5% fee, nothing inside 24 hours, and a A$25 a head charge to reschedule inside 24 hours. Its own ride page states a stricter rule, a full refund only up to seven days before, so the two pages disagree and you should assume the stricter one. Booked direct with HarbourJet, the ticket is non-refundable. Booked direct with Oz Jet, the booking page says full payment is kept if you cancel inside 24 hours, with a A$25 a head rescheduling fee. Booked at our link, all three rides carry a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure.

So the trade on Thunder Jet and HarbourJet is plain: about A$27 to A$36 an adult saved direct, against the right to change your mind. If your Sydney dates are fixed and the forecast is fine, book direct. If you are building a trip around flights, a cruise ship or a family that might not all be well on the day, the dearer ticket buys you a refund.

What the brochures leave out

Thunder Jet's home page says its 45-minute ride lasts 15 minutes longer than any other ride in Sydney. Its sister brand HarbourJet also sells a 45-minute ride from Darling Harbour, so the claim is true only in the sense that one company sells both. HarbourJet, for its part, calls its rides a 35-minute and a 50-minute experience, which includes the safety briefing on the wharf; the time on the water is about 30 and 45 minutes, as our booking partner lists them.

Arrive early: Thunder Jet and HarbourJet want you at the wharf 30 minutes before departure and say they may resell your seat after that, and late arrivals get a shorter ride. Oz Jet asks for 20 minutes and checks photo ID for every adult against the name on the booking, cancelling the ticket if they do not match, which matters if one person booked for a group.

Expect to get wet. All three provide full-length ponchos or water-resistant clothing and lockers at the wharf, and Thunder Jet tells you to bring a change of clothes. Thunder Jet's life jackets take a maximum passenger weight of 150kg, and both Thunder Jet and HarbourJet charge A$70 for a life jacket you inflate on purpose.

Children need to be 120cm tall on all three, and the height rule is enforced at the wharf; Thunder Jet does not refund a child ticket if the child is too short. Thunder Jet does not let anyone under 15 ride without an adult, and Oz Jet requires passengers under 13 to ride with a parent or guardian over 18. All three tell anyone who is pregnant or has a back, neck or heart condition not to ride, and every passenger signs an assumption of risk form, an adult signing for anyone under 18.

Departures differ more than the rides. On the day we checked, Thunder Jet's 30-minute ride ran from 11am to 4pm and HarbourJet's at 12.30pm, 2pm and 3.30pm; Oz Jet's schedule at our booking partner lists departures on the hour from 11am to 4pm, though the November date we checked on its own site showed 12pm, 1pm and 3pm. Thunder Jet's 45-minute ride runs once a day at 12.30pm, and HarbourJet's ran at 12.30pm on the day we checked. Thunder Jet takes up to 23 riders a boat.

So which one?

Ride Thunder Jet if you want the Circular Quay start and the cheapest seat, and you are sure of your date: book on its own website at A$55 plus the 4.5% fee, or pay A$85 at our link for a refund up to 24 hours out. It is also the pick if you want 45 minutes from Circular Quay.

Ride HarbourJet if you are staying around Darling Harbour, Pyrmont or the CBD's western side and would rather not cross to the Quay. It is the same company's ride from the other side of the city, A$49 direct and non-refundable, or A$85 at our link with a 24-hour refund.

Ride Oz Jet if you want the other company, or if you are booking at full price with flexible plans: A$89 at our link with a 24-hour refund is cheaper than its own A$93.85, unless the discount code on its website takes off more. It sells 30 minutes only.

Details change. We verify every price, duration, departure point and inclusion against the operator's own website, and we date every check, but operators can change them at any time without notice. Always confirm the details that matter to you with the operator before you book.

Good to know

How much is a jet boat ride on Sydney Harbour?

For an adult on a 30-minute ride: A$55 on Thunder Jet's own booking engine and A$49 on HarbourJet's when we checked on 24 October 2026, against a retail price of A$85 that both brands publish and our booking partner charges; Thunder Jet adds a 4.5% booking surcharge. Oz Jet is A$89 at our link and A$93.85 at its own checkout before discount codes. The 45-minute rides are A$95 direct or A$119 at our link with Thunder Jet, and A$90 direct or A$99 at our link with HarbourJet.

Are Thunder Jet and HarbourJet the same company?

Yes, on the public record. THUNDER JET BOAT and HARBOURJETBOAT are both registered business names of Sydney Harbour Attractions Pty Ltd (ABN 19 082 702 412), HarbourJet's terms name that company as the one you contract with, and HarbourJet's cancellation phone number is Thunder Jet's. Thunder Jet departs Circular Quay and HarbourJet departs Darling Harbour. Thunder Jet's own terms name a different entity, Yellow Water Taxis Pty Ltd, which we could not find on ABN Lookup.

Is Oz Jet part of Thunder Jet?

Not on the public record. Oz Jet Boating is operated by Sydney Harbour Boating Services Pty Ltd (ABN 18 164 245 550), a separate company that also holds the names Sydney Jet and Down Under Jet Sydney. It shares the Eastern Pontoon at Circular Quay with Thunder Jet but nothing on ABN Lookup connects the two.

Is it cheaper to book a Sydney jet boat direct?

For Thunder Jet and HarbourJet, yes, by about A$27 to A$36 an adult after Thunder Jet's surcharge on the 30-minute ride when we checked, but the direct tickets are harder to cancel: Thunder Jet keeps its 4.5% fee and refunds nothing inside 24 hours, and HarbourJet's tickets are non-refundable. For Oz Jet, no: our link was A$89 against A$93.85 at its own checkout, unless the discount code on its website applies in full.

Where do the Sydney jet boats leave from?

Thunder Jet: Jetty 1, Circular Quay Eastern Pontoon, between ferry wharf 2 and the Opera House. Oz Jet: the Eastern Pontoon, Circular Quay. HarbourJet: Cockle Bay Marina, Darling Harbour, in front of Nick's Seafood Restaurant. Thunder Jet and HarbourJet ask you to check in 30 minutes before departure and Oz Jet 20 minutes.

Will I get wet?

Yes. All three hand out full-length ponchos or water-resistant clothing and life jackets and have lockers at the wharf, and the spins are designed to throw spray. Bring a change of clothes and leave anything that must stay dry in the locker.

Can children ride a Sydney jet boat?

Yes, from 120cm tall on all three, and the height is checked at the wharf; Thunder Jet does not refund a child ticket if the child is too short. Child fares cover ages up to 15. Thunder Jet requires under-15s to ride with an adult and Oz Jet requires under-13s to ride with a parent or guardian over 18. A parent signs the assumption of risk form for anyone under 18.

Do Sydney jet boats run in the rain?

Usually. Thunder Jet says it operates in the rain and cancels only for weather worse than a drizzle, or for wind and swell; HarbourJet uses the same wording. When the operator cancels it offers a free reschedule or a gift voucher; when you cancel, the refund depends on where you booked, and our booking partner refunds in full up to 24 hours before departure.
