Port Douglas is the closest mainland town to the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs, a chain of reefs sitting on the outer edge of Australia's continental shelf about 70 kilometres offshore. That is the reason to start a reef day here rather than in Cairns, and it is the reason the fares are the highest of any reef gateway on this site.
It is also a much smaller market than it looks. Six boats leave the marina each morning under six brand names, and we checked all six on the Australian Business Register rather than taking the websites at their word. Four of them, Quicksilver, Silversonic, Poseidon and Wavedancer, are one company: Quicksilver Connections Limited, ABN 26 010 434 269, which holds every one of those names. Calypso says on its own website that it is part of the Experience Co family. Sailaway's operating entity is JB Sailaway Pty Ltd, an ABN active only since November 2025 and registered in Adelaide, and Journey Beyond lists Sailaway Port Douglas on its own site alongside Horizontal Falls and Exmouth Dive. A reader comparing six operators is comparing three owners.
The second thing worth knowing before you compare fares. Not every boat sold as a Great Barrier Reef tour from Port Douglas goes to the outer reef. Wavedancer sails to Low Isles, a four acre coral cay 15 kilometres offshore that Quicksilver's own website describes as an inshore reef. It is a lovely, easy, family day. It is not the ribbon reefs, and it is roughly A$100 cheaper for that reason.
Fares here run from A$234.60 to A$370. Two of the six are currently discounted 15 percent at our booking links against the operators' own published fares, and both discounts have a published end date, so the prices on this page revert automatically when they lapse. Three of the six add a fuel surcharge on top of the headline fare, and one of the six leaves the guided snorkel tour out of the fare entirely and sells it back at A$89. Those two lines move the real cost of a reef day more than the sticker price does.

The only boat that sails, and the only one with daily access to Mackay Coral Cay, a sand island on the outer reef where the snorkelling is shallow, protected and done at your own pace rather than from a mooring in open water. Sailaway states it has exclusive use of its reef sites. Four and a half hours at one place instead of ninety minutes at each of three is a genuinely different day, and the boat is a 25 metre sailing catamaran rather than a wavepiercer.
It is also the dearest fare on this page at A$370, identical here and direct, and the fare includes the courtesy coach from your Port Douglas accommodation, a guided snorkel tour with a marine biologist, a glass bottom boat tour, buffet lunch with prawns, and wetsuits in winter. There is no diving. If you want a coral cay and a sail rather than a reef and a schedule, nothing else here offers it.

A dedicated snorkelling boat, with no diving sold on this product at all, which is why it can put every guest in the water at three sites rather than splitting the crew between snorkellers and dive groups. Calypso says it works from a pool of more than 34 reef sites and picks three each morning on the weather, cruising 90 minutes to Opal Reef or a little further to Agincourt.
It is the second most reviewed operator on this page and the fare is the same A$329 here as on its own website, so there is no advantage either way. What its own website does say, and its Viator listing does not, is that on days with low passenger numbers or unsuitable weather it may move people between Agincourt and Opal Reefs and that it may not be possible to give notice before you travel.

The most complete outer reef day on this page at the moment, and the only fare here that is meaningfully cheaper at our link than at the operator's own checkout. The published fare is A$328 on silverseries.com.au; the option sold through this link is A$278.80, a 15 percent discount the operator is not advertising on its own site, running to 25 September 2026. When it lapses this page will revert to A$328 by itself.
What you get for it is three different reef environments at the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs in one day, a guided snorkel tour with a marine naturalist at every site plus a dedicated Reef Discovery tour at the third, all snorkel gear including lycra suits and prescription masks, a hot and cold buffet lunch, and a free return coach from your Port Douglas accommodation. Certified divers add A$61 for a tank and weights. It is a dive boat that treats snorkellers properly, which is not the same thing as a snorkelling boat.

The biggest operation on the reef and the only genuinely accessible one. A wavepiercer catamaran runs to a permanently moored platform at Agincourt Reef, on the very edge of the continental shelf, where there is an underwater observatory, semi submersibles leaving every fifteen minutes, ramp access from the vessel to the platform and an accessible toilet on board. If someone in your group cannot or will not swim, this is the only boat on this page that still gives them a reef day.
The catch is what the A$338 fare does not include, and it is more than anywhere else here. The guided snorkel tour is an optional extra at A$89 per adult, the coach from your Port Douglas accommodation is A$26 return, and a fuel surcharge of A$10 per adult is added at booking. A guided snorkel with a marine biologist, arriving by coach, costs A$463 all in on this boat and A$338 on Silversonic, which the same company owns.

The easy day, and the honest place to say so: this is not the outer reef. Wavedancer is a 30 metre sailing catamaran that crosses 15 kilometres to Low Isles, a four acre coral cay that Quicksilver's own Wavedancer website describes, in its own words, as an inshore reef. All the snorkelling, including the guided tour, is done from the island beach rather than from the boat, which is why it works for children and for anyone who has never put a mask on.
The fare is A$234.60 at this link until 18 September 2026, against a standing A$276, and this one is the operator's own sale rather than a Viator-only discount: the same 15 percent banner sits at the top of wavedancerlowisles.com. The day includes lunch, a guided beach and heritage trail walk with a marine biologist, a glass bottom coral viewer, morning and afternoon tea and a glass of sparkling on the way home.

A 24 metre catamaran built for divers, running three sites at the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs and Escape Reef with a marine biologist briefing at each. It is the same fare as Silversonic, from the same owner, to the same reefs, and the price ladder matches option for option: A$328 to snorkel, A$426 with one introductory dive, A$514 with two. That is not a coincidence and the operator does not pretend otherwise, since its sister site says Poseidon substitutes for Silversonic during maintenance.
Two things separate it. Poseidon holds a permit to swim with dwarf minke whales, which pass through in June and July and which no other boat on this page can offer. And it carries fewer passengers, with certified divers able to do up to three dives in the day at A$128 for the set. If you are a certified diver, this is the boat; if you are not, Silversonic is currently the same day for A$49 less.

Which of these actually go to the outer reef?
Five of the six. Quicksilver, Silversonic and Poseidon all run to the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs, Calypso runs to Opal, Tongue or Agincourt depending on the day, and Sailaway sails to Mackay Coral Cay. Wavedancer does not: it goes to Low Isles, which Quicksilver's own Wavedancer website places 15 kilometres north east of Port Douglas and describes as a four acre coral cay surrounded by 55 acres of reef, in a section headed with the words inshore reefs. Low Isles is inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and it is genuinely good snorkelling for children and nervous swimmers, because all of it is done from a beach rather than from a boat in open water. If what you pictured was the reef at the edge of the shelf, it is the wrong boat, and no amount of Great Barrier Reef in the product title changes that.
Are four of these boats really the same company?
Yes, and it is not an inference. ABN 26 010 434 269, Quicksilver Connections Limited, an Australian public company registered in Cairns since February 2000, holds the registered business names Quicksilver Cruises, Quicksilver Outer Reef Cruises, Silver Sonic Dive and Snorkel, Silver Swift Dive and Snorkel, Silver Series, Wavedancer Low Isles Cruises, Poseidon Outer Reef Cruises, Great Adventures, Ocean Spirit Cruises, Green Island Resort, Quicksilver Dive Centre and Reef Biosearch. The group does not hide it: the footer of every one of those websites links to all the others. What it does not say on any product page is that Silversonic and Poseidon are priced identically, option for option, from A$328 for the snorkel fare through to A$514 for two introductory dives, or that Silverseries' own Silversonic page states that Poseidon will operate in place of Silversonic during scheduled maintenance. You can book what you think are two competing dive boats and be sold the same day at the same price by the same company, on whichever hull is free.
What is the cheapest way to do the outer reef from Port Douglas?
Right now it is Silversonic at the link on this page, at A$278.80 against A$328 on the operator's own website, because of a 15 percent discount that Viator is running and the operator is not. That ends on 25 September 2026, and the price on this page will revert to A$328 on its own when it does. After that the cheapest outer reef fares are Silversonic and Poseidon at A$328, then Calypso at A$329 in peak season and A$319 from 12 October 2026, then Quicksilver at A$338 plus its A$10 fuel surcharge, then Sailaway at A$370. But read the inclusions before you sort on price: Silversonic, Poseidon, Calypso and Sailaway all include the guided snorkel tour and Silversonic, Poseidon and Sailaway include the coach from your accommodation, while Quicksilver includes neither.
What is the fuel surcharge, and who charges it?
Quicksilver, Silversonic and Poseidon each publish the same notice on their own fares pages: a fuel surcharge of A$10 per adult and A$5 per child aged 4 to 14, payable at the time of booking, effective from 1 April 2026. It is not in the headline fare and it is not in the Viator fare either, where it appears in the exclusions as surcharges on fuel. So the real all in outer reef fare for Quicksilver is A$348, not A$338. Wavedancer's own fares page, from the same company, carries no fuel surcharge at all, and neither Calypso nor Sailaway publishes one. All six include the government Environmental Management Charge of A$8.50 in the ticket price.
Is the guided snorkel tour included?
On five of the six, yes. On Quicksilver, no, and this is the largest hidden cost on the page. Quicksilver's own fares table lists the Introductory Guided Snorkel Tour at A$89 per adult and the Advanced Guided Snorkel Tour at A$110, as optional activities alongside scuba and the helicopter flight. What is included in the A$338 fare is a marine biologist talk, the semi submersible, the underwater observatory and free swimming from the pontoon. If a guided snorkel with a biologist is the thing you want, Quicksilver's real price is A$437 with the surcharge, which is the dearest number on this page by A$67, and Silversonic includes the same thing at A$338 all in.
Do they all leave from the same place?
Yes, and this is one of the rare cases where the marina is not the trap. All six check in at Crystalbrook Marina, 44 Wharf Street, Port Douglas, which older signage and some guidebooks still call Marina Mirage or the Port Douglas Marina. Sailaway is at the Sailaway Boathouse, berth D6. Parking at the marina is free. Where they differ is getting there: Silversonic, Poseidon and Sailaway include a coach from Port Douglas accommodation in the fare, Calypso charges a small fee for limited capacity transfers, and Quicksilver charges A$26 return per adult from Port Douglas and A$45 from Cairns and the northern beaches. Check in times are spread across the morning, from 7:15am for Calypso's Low Isles trip to 9:15am for Quicksilver.
Why isn't Wavelength Reef Cruises on this list?
Because it is not sold through any affiliate link we have, and we would rather say so than leave it out quietly. Wavelength Reef Cruises Pty Ltd, ABN 34 168 338 627, is the one genuinely independent reef operator still running daily out of Port Douglas, and it is not on Viator at all: five separate searches of the Viator catalogue returned every other boat in this town and never returned Wavelength. Its own published fare is A$318 for adults and A$228 for children aged 6 to 14, booked through FareHarbor on its own website, and that fare includes the marine biology snorkel tour, wetsuit or lycra hire, prescription masks, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, the A$8.50 Environmental Management Charge and the photos of the day by Dropbox. It carries no divers and takes no children under 6, which is why it can spend the whole day on snorkelling. If you want the outer reef with the smallest operator and you do not need a dive, book it directly at wavelength.com.au. We earn nothing from that sentence.
What about Low Isles if I do want the easy day?
There are three ways to do it and they are priced strangely. Wavedancer, the 30 metre sailing catamaran, is A$276 for a full day, discounted to A$234.60 at the link on this page until 18 September 2026. Calypso runs a half day to Low Isles at A$267 in peak season and A$246 off peak, boarding at 7:15am and back by 11:30am, with only 30 minutes of cruising each way. Sailaway's full day Low Isles trip is A$365, which is A$5 less than its outer reef trip to Mackay Cay on the same boat class, so if you are choosing between those two Sailaway products the outer reef one is close to free. All three include lunch or refreshments, guided snorkelling and a glass bottom boat.
Which reef day suits children?
Wavedancer and Quicksilver, for opposite reasons. Wavedancer snorkels entirely from the beach at Low Isles, takes infants free, charges A$148 for children aged 4 to 14, and has a family fare of A$710, and the crossing is 75 minutes on a stable sailing catamaran. Quicksilver is the only boat here that is wheelchair accessible, with ramp access from the vessel to the Agincourt 3 pontoon and an accessible toilet on board, and its pontoon means nobody has to get in the water at all: there is an underwater observatory and a semi submersible running every fifteen minutes. Its child fare of A$179 is also the lowest outer reef child fare on the page by A$30. Poseidon and Silversonic are dive boats where the day is built around getting wet, and Sailaway's own page asks that snorkellers be confident swimmers.
What happens if the weather turns?
Every booking made at the links on this page is fully refundable up to 24 hours before departure, which is the strongest term available on any of these boats and is a Viator condition rather than an operator one. Booked directly, the terms are looser and they differ. Quicksilver's FAQ says a cruise that does not operate gets you an alternative day or a refund, and it says outright that it very rarely cancels except for cyclones. Calypso says it is flexible about moving your day with 24 hours notice but that cancelling inside 24 hours can cost up to 100 percent. Sailaway's booking conditions say it does not cancel for forecast showers, only for extreme rain, wind, swell or tide, and that where it does cancel you may elect a refund or a credit note redeemable within 24 months. Sailaway's conditions also reserve the right to substitute a different vessel of similar standard with no refund, which matters on a page where the boat is most of what you are buying.
How do you make money from this page, and where does it cost you?
