Three companies sell hot air balloon flights on the Gold Coast, and all three are on this page: Go Ballooning, Hot Air Balloon Gold Coast and Balloon Aloft Gold Coast. We checked the business register rather than the marketing, and they are three genuinely separate companies with three separate ABNs, which is not something you can assume in Australian ballooning.
The headline fares run from A$289 to A$397 for what is essentially the same product: a pre-dawn pickup, an hour or so in a basket at sunrise, and a drive home. The interesting part is not the gap between the operators. It is that the cheapest place to buy each flight is different for each one, and the direction reverses. One operator is A$39 cheaper booked here than on its own website. Another is A$80 cheaper on its own website than it is here. We have published both numbers on every listing, including the ones that cost us the commission.
The other thing worth knowing before you book anything: none of the three can tell you in advance where you will fly. All three choose the launch site on the morning, by wind direction. A Gold Coast balloon flight is not a flight over the beach.

The most reviewed balloon operator on the Gold Coast by a very wide margin, and the only one of the three whose fare is identical whether you book through us or through its own website. You meet in Broadbeach, or get collected from a Gold Coast hotel, and the whole morning is done in about four hours, which is two hours shorter than the hinterland alternative.
It is also the dearest entry fare on this page at A$397, and that fare does not include breakfast. Adding the Sheraton Grand Mirage buffet takes it to A$427, which is the cheapest breakfast upgrade of the three and the version most people should buy. The digital photo package is included at every tier, which it is not at Balloon Aloft's matching fare.

The cheapest way into a Gold Coast balloon, and the only one of the three that is meaningfully cheaper here than on the operator's own website: A$290 against A$329 through its own checkout, for the same flight, in the same published season. The insurance levy, the private vehicle transfer, a glass of sparkling on landing and a digital photo pack worth A$135 are all in the fare.
The cost is time and geography. These balloons fly the Gold Coast Hinterland about an hour inland from Surfers Paradise, so the operator puts the morning at roughly six hours against four for the others. If you want vineyards and mountains rather than a shot at the skyline, that is the product working as intended. If you assumed you were floating over the beach, it is not.

The longest published flight time of the three and the only operator that promises an actual refund rather than a rebooking when the weather goes against you. It has been flying the Gold Coast since 1995 and holds the strongest breakfast add-on logic of the three: A$50 buys the Harvest Buffet at The Star, and there is a long tail of combination packages bolting on jet boats, jet skis, glow worm caves and Springbrook.
It is also the one listing on this page where the review platforms genuinely disagree. Google has it at 4.7 from close to 800 ratings, which is solid. Tripadvisor has it at 3.4 from 22, which is the lowest figure anywhere on this site. The AE Score below pools both, weighted by sample size, so Google carries most of it and the Tripadvisor result pulls it down. We have not resolved the disagreement because we cannot; we have shown you it exists.

Do you actually fly over the Gold Coast?
Not necessarily, and no operator will promise it. Every balloon launch site is chosen on the morning according to wind direction, because a balloon goes where the air goes. Hot Air Balloon Gold Coast is the most direct about this: its own FAQ says flights take place in the Gold Coast Hinterland, roughly an hour from Surfers Paradise, over mountains, valleys and bushland, and that the launch site is picked just before dawn. Balloon Aloft describes itself as the only ballooning experience that specialises in flying over the Gold Coast and lists the Hinterland, the waterways and the northern and southern Gold Coast among its flying areas, with about 100 possible landing sites depending on wind. Go Ballooning sells every one of its packages under the same line, a flight over the Gold Coast or Hinterland. If the skyline is the entire reason you are booking, understand that you are buying a chance at it, not a guarantee.
How early does it start, and how long does it really take?
Pickups are around 4am. The morning is longer than the flight by a factor of four or more. Go Ballooning puts the whole experience at about four hours, and Hot Air Balloon Gold Coast puts it at about six, which is the single biggest practical difference between them: its balloons fly in the hinterland an hour inland, so there is an hour of coach out and an hour back on top of everything else. Hot Air's own itinerary has you toasting the landing between 8:00am and 9:15am, before the drive home. Time in the air is 30 to 60 minutes at Go Ballooning (its own stated average is 45 minutes), 40 to 65 minutes for more than half of Hot Air's flights, and a stated 60 minutes at Balloon Aloft.
Which one is cheapest, and where should I buy it?
It depends on the operator, and this is the part no other comparison page covers. Hot Air Balloon Gold Coast charges A$329 for its Bubbles & Go flight through its own checkout, and the same flight is A$290 at the link on this page, so booking here saves A$39. Its vineyard breakfast package is A$495 on its own site and A$420 here. Balloon Aloft runs the other way: its 60 minute flight with champagne breakfast is A$339 on its own website and A$419 here, so you should buy that one direct. Go Ballooning is A$397 either way. We earn a commission only when you use our links, so the honest version is that on two of these three you should probably ignore ours.
What happens if the weather cancels the flight?
The three policies are genuinely different and worth reading before you pick. Balloon Aloft states that if you cannot fly because of weather, time or travel constraints it will refund your money. Hot Air Balloon Gold Coast says it notifies you the afternoon before and you choose either another day or a 100 percent refund, although its discounted special fares are date transferable and non-refundable. Go Ballooning does not refund a weather cancellation at all: its terms say you are welcome to rebook any time within a 12 month period, and if you cancel yourself within 48 hours there is no refund and no reschedule. If you have exactly one free morning on the Gold Coast, that difference matters more than A$40 of fare does.
Is there anything unusual in the fine print?
Yes, in Go Ballooning's. Its published terms and conditions state that it may arrange for your flight to be carried out by another balloon company, and that it accepts no liability in connection with those services. That is the operator's own wording, on its own terms page, and it means the company whose name is on your booking is not necessarily the company whose basket you stand in. None of the three publishes a formal safety record, so we are not ranking on that; we are simply pointing at a clause that a reader would want to have seen.
Can children, older travellers or larger passengers fly?
Mostly yes, with real conditions. The minimum age is 3 across all three (Hot Air's Bubbles & Go product lists 4), and children must be with an adult. You must be able to climb into the basket unaided, over a wall about 1.2 metres high, and stand for the entire flight. Wheelchairs cannot be accommodated. Hot Air states there is no weight limit but asks you to say at booking if anyone in the group is over 100kg so it can allocate a place to stand. All three list ballooning as unsuitable during pregnancy, and Balloon Aloft is specific: over 12 weeks, you cannot fly. Nobody publishes a height limit.
Is the breakfast worth adding?
It is the cheapest decision on the page and the one where the operators differ most. Go Ballooning adds A$30 for a five star buffet at the Sheraton Grand Mirage, which is the best value add-on here. Balloon Aloft adds A$50 for the Harvest Buffet at The Star. Hot Air's cheapest breakfast option is a A$166 jump from its Bubbles & Go fare to its A$495 vineyard package, which buys a hot breakfast at O'Reilly's Canungra Valley Vineyard plus a wine tasting and the alpaca farm next door, so it is a different morning rather than a coffee upgrade. After a 4am start, landing somewhere warm at 8am is worth more than it sounds.
Why isn't Floating Images on this list?
Because it is a Brisbane operator, not a Gold Coast one, and the distinction is bigger than it looks on a map. Floating Images checks in at 259 Junction Road, Karalee, about 30 minutes west of Brisbane's CBD, and its own site says it flies over the Ipswich, Scenic Rim and Somerset regions of Greater Brisbane. From Surfers Paradise that is a drive of well over an hour in the dark to reach a balloon that flies over a different part of Queensland. It is a real operator and may well be the right choice from Brisbane. It is not a Gold Coast flight. For the same reason we have left out Go Ballooning's A$495 Sirromet Winery package, which asks you to self drive to a vineyard at Mount Cotton, south of Brisbane.
Are these three actually separate companies?
Yes, and we checked rather than assumed. The Australian Business Register lists Go Ballooning Gold Coast Pty Ltd (ABN 76 005 825 669, Nerang), Hot Air Pty Ltd (ABN 97 053 836 025), which holds the registered business names Hot Air Balloon Gold Coast and Hot Air Balloon Brisbane along with Cairns and Port Douglas, and Proflex Pty Ltd (ABN 92 010 927 483, Molendinar), which trades as Balloon Aloft. One thing worth knowing: the Balloon Aloft name is registered separately in New South Wales under a different ABN, so the Balloon Aloft you may have flown with in the Hunter Valley is not the company operating on the Gold Coast. Two of the three have also recently registered near identical extra business names, Luxury Ballooning Gold Coast and Luxury Ballooning, which is a reason to check whose booking page you are actually on.
