The Gold Coast has the longest humpback season on the east coast, roughly June to the start of November, and the whales pass within a few kilometres of the Seaway, so most cruises are watching within 20 to 40 minutes of leaving the dock. Only four companies sell a public whale watching cruise here in 2026, and their brochures make the same four promises: a 100% sighting guarantee, expert commentary, a stable boat and the closest encounter on the coast. So we priced every one of them on the operators' own booking engines in September 2026, checked their departure points against the fact that Mariners Cove Marina, the address half the internet still gives you, has closed, and read their terms for what a guarantee is actually worth.
Three things decide the day. First, where you board: two boats leave from Main Beach (Marina Mirage and the Sea World Cruises Terminal), one from Southport across the Broadwater, and one from Chinderah on the Tweed River in New South Wales, 10 minutes past Coolangatta and 40 minutes from Surfers. Second, the boat: a 120-passenger catamaran with four toilets and a bar is a different day from a 12-seat rigid inflatable with jockey seats and a minimum age of six. Third, the price at the link versus the price on the operator's site, which on this page runs both ways: one cruise is A$35 cheaper booked here than direct, another is A$20 dearer. We also checked the Australian Business Register, because the city's original whale watching brand and its most famous one are the same company, and that company is not the theme park its name suggests.
2.5-Hour Whale Watching Cruise · Marina Mirage, Main Beach

The newest of the four and, on the review data, among the best liked. A single purpose-built vessel with 360-degree viewing from every position, an underwater camera feeding two drop-down screens so you see the whale from below as well as beside you, a licensed bar and a crew whose commentary reviewers keep describing as funny rather than lectured. It leaves from Marina Mirage at Main Beach and is on the Whale Highway about 20 minutes after clearing the Seaway, which is as short a transit as any boat on this page.
It is A$88 adult at our link and A$88 on the operator's own Rezdy engine, so there is nothing to gain by booking direct; child (3 to 15) is A$77 either way and a family of four A$280. The operator publishes no passenger cap, only 'a limited number of seats', and its own booking calendar showed 43 seats still open on a school-holiday afternoon, so read 'intimate' as smaller than the catamarans rather than small. Kokomo Cruises is a registered business name of a sole trader since July 2021, with a company of the same name registered in September 2025.

The opposite of the catamarans: a 32-foot rigid inflatable with jockey seats, twin 250hp outboards, a maximum of 12 guests and a naturalist who is sitting next to you rather than on a PA. You are at water level, which is what 'eye-level viewing' means, and the boat covers ground fast enough that the crew can chase a sighting rather than wait for one. Its ratings are as high as any on this page on every source, from the smallest sample, and a 12-seat boat will always have fewer reviews.
It is sold on Viator as a Gold Coast cruise and it is not one: the boat leaves from Chinderah on the Tweed River in New South Wales, 10 minutes past Coolangatta and about 40 minutes from Surfers Paradise, and heads out through the Tweed bar. That is a good thing for the whales, which follow the shelf closest to shore between Byron and the Gold Coast, and a bad thing if you are staying at Main Beach without a car. It is also the one listing here that is dearer at our link than direct: A$149 here against A$129 on the operator's own Rezdy engine, where a 15% discount code was also running in September. The trade-off for booking direct is a 48-hour phone cancellation rule instead of our 24 hours.

Best for: Travellers with a car who want the closest, rawest encounter and would rather be on the water than above it.

The operator with the best terminal and the most machinery: a heated indoor terminal with a cafe and gift shop, free parking in the Sea World car park, hydrophones so you hear the whales, underwater cameras streaming to your phone, a photographer on board and a claimed 'car park to Humpback Highway in under 45 minutes'. The flagship Spirit of Migaloo II was built for this in 2019. It is also the only operator here whose direct booking terms are better than ours: cancel up to three hours before departure for a full refund, against 24 hours at the link.
Two things the brochure leaves out. The price is dynamic: the operator's own engine charged anywhere from A$89 to A$129 for the same cruise on the same Saturday in September depending on the departure time, and A$79 on a weekday in the second half of October, against a printed RRP of A$119. At our link it is A$99 on a weekday to 11 October and A$119 on a weekend, then A$89 and A$99 from 12 October, so compare the two for your date. And the name: Sea World Cruises is run by The Tour Collective under a licence bought from Village Roadshow in 2019, and its own terms state it is 'independent from Village Roadshow Theme Parks, who operates Sea World'. You are boarding from the theme park's car park, not buying from the theme park.

The big boat. Spirit is a 24-metre catamaran surveyed for 120 passengers and five crew, with upper and lower viewing decks, four toilets, a licensed bar and a marine biologist on the microphone, and it is the vessel to pick if you are unsure of your sea legs or travelling with a pram or a wheelchair (non-motorised and collapsible, and you must be able to move yourself). The brand has run Gold Coast whale cruises for three decades; the company behind it, Spirit Gold Coast Pty Ltd, was registered in July 2023.
Its ratings are the lowest of the four, which is why it ranks where it does; the price is the reason to consider it anyway. It is A$74 adult at our link, which the live listing shows as 'From $74.00', against A$109 on the operator's own website, A$35 less for the same 9:30am or 1:30pm cruise; the child fare is A$59 here against A$69 direct. The operator's own site is the place to book only if you are a senior or student, at A$89, or want the A$287 family ticket. Its home for 19 years was Mariners Cove Marina, which has closed, and it now leaves from the Aqua Adventures Centre on Marine Parade in Southport, on the other side of the Broadwater from Main Beach.

Where do Gold Coast whale watching boats actually leave from?
Four different places, and one of the addresses you will find online no longer exists. Kokomo Cruises leaves from Marina Mirage, 74 Seaworld Drive, Main Beach (meet in the courtyard outside the Ray White Marine office). Sea World Cruises leaves from the Sea World Cruises Terminal on Seaworld Drive, inside the Sea World car park, with free parking and no theme park entry required. Spirit of Gold Coast leaves from the Aqua Adventures Centre at 95 Marine Parade, Southport, on the western side of the Broadwater: it spent 19 years at Mariners Cove Marina, which has closed, and its own FAQ still carries bus directions to 'Mariner's Cove Marina, Berth 95/Arm D' that will send you to the wrong side of the water. Cooly Eco Adventures is not on the Gold Coast at all: it leaves from 139 Chinderah Bay Drive, Chinderah, on the Tweed River in New South Wales, about 10 minutes south of Coolangatta and 40 minutes from Surfers Paradise by car. Nobody on this page offers hotel pickup. The Sea World buses (704 and 705) serve Main Beach from Surfers Paradise and Helensvale station; Southport is on the G:link tram.
What happened to Whales in Paradise, the cruise from Surfers Paradise?
It is now the same company as Sea World Whale Watch, and in 2026 its website says so: 'Please Note: Whales in Paradise now Code Shares with Sea World Whale Watching.' The Tour Collective was formed in 2019 by merging Whales in Paradise with Wyndham Cruises, and the same year it bought the licence from Village Roadshow to trade as Sea World Cruises and Sea World Whale Watching. The Whales in Paradise site still describes an 8:30am and 2:30pm departure from the Hopo kiosk at Appel Park, Surfers Paradise, at A$119 adult, but its 'Buy Tickets' button opens the Sea World Whale Watch booking engine, whose product departs from the Sea World Cruises Terminal at Main Beach and offers no Surfers Paradise option; its gift voucher page is dead and its brochure is dated May 2023. On the Australian Business Register the company holding the Whales in Paradise business name is not currently registered for GST, which any business turning over more than A$75,000 a year must be. We could not verify that a Surfers Paradise departure operates in 2026, so we have not ranked it. If you specifically want to board at Surfers Paradise, ring (07) 5538 2111 and ask before you pay.
Which of these companies are the same company, and is Sea World Whale Watch the theme park?
No. Sea World Cruises and Sea World Whale Watch are operated by The Tour Collective (The Tour Collective Pty Ltd, ABN 43 630 663 982; the 'Sea World Cruises' business name is held by its SW Cruiseco Pty Ltd, ABN 12 629 158 005) under a trading licence acquired from Village Roadshow in 2019, and its own terms state that it 'is independent from Village Roadshow Theme Parks, who operates Sea World'. The same group owns Whales in Paradise, Hopo ferries, Arro Jet and See Moreton. The other three are unrelated to it and to each other: Spirit of Gold Coast is Spirit Gold Coast Pty Ltd (ABN 60 670 125 121, registered July 2023, a newer company behind a 30-year-old brand); Kokomo Cruises is a business name registered to a sole trader in July 2021, with Kokomo Cruises Pty Ltd registered in September 2025; Cooly Eco Adventures is a business name of The Trustee for The LTA Trust (ABN 71 705 693 549), which also runs the Swim with Whales Gold Coast tours from the same boat ramp. All checked on the Australian Business Register on 22 September 2026.
What is a '100% whale sighting guarantee' actually worth?
All four operators offer one, and none of them is a refund. Every guarantee is a free return cruise if no whale is sighted, and the differences are in the small print. Sea World Cruises' voucher is valid for 12 months, the only one that outlasts the season. Spirit of Gold Coast's must be used within the same whale season (or an extension confirmed by email), can be transferred to a friend or family member, and its terms say plainly 'No refunds will be provided in the event of no whale sightings'. Kokomo and Cooly Eco publish no validity period. Spirit also defines what counts: 'we find and approach at least one whale during our trip', at the captain's discretion. If you are on the coast for three days, treat the guarantee as a courtesy rather than insurance, and book early in your stay so a return is possible. Sighting rates are high: two operators claim 99% of trips see whales, and peak months are July to September.
When is whale watching season on the Gold Coast, and when does each operator stop?
Humpbacks pass the Gold Coast northbound from about late May and southbound, often with calves, until early November, and the operators say the same: 'June to early November' (Spirit), 'late May to early November, peak July to September' (Sea World), 'May to November' (Cooly Eco). What matters for booking is when each stops selling. On their booking schedules in September 2026: Kokomo's season runs 1 June to 15 October, Spirit's 31 May to 31 October on its own site and 2 November at our link, Sea World's to 1 November at our link, and Cooly Eco's calendar is open-ended. So in the second half of October, when southbound mothers and calves travel closest to shore, only three of the four are still running.
Is it cheaper to book direct?
It depends which boat, and it runs both ways on this page. Spirit of Gold Coast is A$74 adult at our link against A$109 on its own site, the largest gap in the reader's favour we have found on any page; child is A$59 against A$69. Kokomo is A$88 both ways. Sea World Cruises prices every departure separately on its own engine: on a Saturday in late September it ranged from A$89 at 2:30pm to A$129 at 9:00am, on a weekday in mid-October it was A$79 across the board, while our link is a flat A$99 weekday and A$119 weekend to 11 October and A$89 and A$99 after, so for that boat compare the two for your date and time. Cooly Eco is the reverse of Spirit: A$149 at our link against A$129 direct, and it was also running a 15% direct discount code in September. Weigh the terms as well as the fare: booking at our link gives free cancellation up to 24 hours before on all four, whereas direct Spirit gives no change-of-mind refund at all and Cooly Eco needs 48 hours by phone. Sea World is the exception where direct is more flexible, refunding in full up to three hours before departure.
Which boat should I pick if I get seasick, or have a pram or a wheelchair?
Spirit of Gold Coast. It is a 24-metre catamaran surveyed for 120 passengers with upper and lower decks, indoor seating and four toilets, and it is the only operator here that states it takes prams (tell them when booking) and non-motorised, collapsible wheelchairs via an 80cm ramp, though the crew cannot lift anyone and its second vessel, Spirit Junior, may not be accessible. Sea World Cruises describes its boats as wheelchair accessible with limited seats and asks you to contact them in advance. Kokomo's listing says infants sit on laps and does not recommend it for pregnant travellers or spinal injuries, and Cooly Eco's 12-seat rigid inflatable is the wrong boat for anyone with a back problem, anyone pregnant, or a child under six. Every operator says the same thing about seasickness: take a tablet from the pharmacy 30 minutes before, eat lightly, and stay outside watching the horizon. The swell outside the Seaway is real on any boat.
What about the Tweed Heads and Coolangatta boats?
Two other companies run whale cruises from Tweed Heads, Cooly Tweed Cruises from Ivory Marina and Tweed Gold Coast Dive Charters from the Dry Dock jetty, and a third, Australian Cruise Group, resells a Tweed Heads cruise. None of them is on the booking platforms whose review data feeds our scores, Cooly Tweed Cruises publishes no price on its website, and we could not verify enough about either operator from its own site to rank it against the four above. Cooly Eco Adventures, which leaves from Chinderah a few minutes further up the Tweed River, is the verified option on that stretch of coast.
Which operators did you leave out, and why?
Whales in Paradise, because we could not verify that its Surfers Paradise departure still runs (see above). The Tweed Heads operators, for lack of verifiable pricing and review data. Sea World's Captain's Lounge (from A$159) and the operators' private charters (Kokomo's private whale charter, Cooly Eco's A$1,400 boat for 12) are upgrades of the products ranked here rather than separate cruises, and Cooly Eco's swim-with-whales tour (from A$399) is a different activity with its own rules.
